About 60 people came together at 5 p.m. Wednesday afternoon to march through downtown Raeford in a peaceful protest, carrying signs and singing gospel. Walking By Faith Divine Ministry organized the march in memory of George Floyd, according to a Facebook post.
Protesters walked from the Hoke County Courthouse on Main Street to the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office on East Central Avenue. Raeford Police Chief Marc Godwin walked with the group, which had a police escort directing traffic. Deputies from the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office walked across the street from the office to join the group when they arrived.
At the end of the march, Godwin and organizers offered remarks. Attendees knelt on the ground together during a prayer.
Organizers with the Hoke County Peacekeepers group planned another protest set for 1 p.m. Friday in downtown Raeford.
