The School Nutrition Association has named Hoke County Schools Child Nutrition Executive Director Deborah Carpenter the 2020 Director of the Year for the state of North Carolina.

“On behalf of SNA, I would like to thank you for the great work you do every day to ensure well-nourished students are prepared for success,” SNA President Gay Anderson said in an email announcing the award.

School Nutrition Magazine will feature Carpenter in a special digital edition of its magazine in July. The SNA is also putting together a social media campaign for the week of July 13 to celebrate Carpenter and her peers. The director will also receive a certificate and ribbon to recognize her achievement.

Carpenter has worked with the Hoke County Schools child nutrition program for decades. This spring she jumped into action when schools closed due to COVID-19, and brought her team together to keep feeding children by delivering meals on school buses. Under her leadership, the school nutrition program was able to provide more than 600,000 meals to children from March to early June. Currently she and her team are preparing to provide meals throughout the summer through the USDA’s summer nutrition program.
