A single-vehicle accident early Monday morning killed a Hoke County teenager and seriously injured several others. The accident happened around 1:37 a.m. on Army Road, according to a report by Trooper D. Clark of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Driver Devin Warfield was operating a P.T. Cruiser traveling on Army Road from N.C. 211, traveling “at a high rate of speed,” the report said. When the vehicle entered a curve in the road, the driver apparently lost control. The P.T. Cruiser ran off the road to the right and struck a tree. A passenger riding in the front seat of the vehicle, 18-year-old Gillian Nicole Dix of Hoke County was killed in the accident. First responders pronounced her dead at the scene. Warfield and two passengers riding in the backseat of the P.T. Cruiser were injured in the wreck. Warfield was flown by helicopter to UNC Chapel Hill Hospital. Passenger Seth Thompson was taken by ambulance to Moore Regional Hospital and then flown by helicopter to UNC Chapel Hill Hospital. Passenger Desaria Hicks, was taken by ambulance to Cape Fear Valley Hoke Hospital. Speed is believed to be a factor in the accident, according to the Highway Patrol.
