A man from Raeford reportedly drowned at Myrtle Beach this weekend while swimming in the ocean, according to officials.
Roosevelt Robinson Jr., 33, was pulled out of the ocean at Myrtle Beach just before noon Sunday, according to an email from Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden. Authorities said rescuers took Robinson to a hospital, where he died. Officials ruled Robinson’s death was an accidental drowning. Myrtle Beach police are handling the investigation.
Kornelia Purcell, a family member from Fayetteville, organized a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses.
“I am the eldest sibling of our brother Roosevelt Robinson. Today we received one of the most difficult phone calls of Roosevelt fighting for his life, after being submerged under water at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina,” Purcell wrote in a GoFundMe post. “After an hour of medical support, Roosevelt has left his children, mother, sisters, family and friends. We are asking for your help. Our brother was not covered in life insurance, and to prevent a financial burden, we are asking for any donations speedily to assist with proper burial.”
The GoFundMe campaign is available on www.gofundme.com in the Funerals and Memorials section under the name, “Roosevelt Robinson Jr.” Robinson was the son of Pastor Mechele Robinson and the late Roosevelt Robinson Sr. Funeral plans were still being determined.
