Local Candidate Q&As

We sent out questions to the four candidates seeking election to the Hoke County Board of Education, and the five candidates seeking election to the Hoke County Board of Commissioners, to help voters get to know them. We publish their responses here in full.

Hoke County Board of Education Election 2020

There are two seats up for election on the Hoke County Board of Education. Voters may vote for two out of four candidates. The Hoke County Board of Education is nonpartisan.

Important Dates & Deadlines

Deadline to Register To Vote in North Carolina
Friday, October 9

You can also register to vote with same-day voter registration during in-person one-stop early voting. Same-day voter registration is not available on Election Day.

The dates and times for one-stop early voting, in person, for Hoke County are as follows.

Last Day To Request A Mail-In Absentee Ballot
October 27 by 5 p.m.

Last Day To Mail an Absentee Ballot
The ballot must be postmarked on or before Tuesday, November 3, and received by Friday, November 6 at 5 p.m. PLEASE NOTE: The N.C. State Board of Elections strongly recommends you mail your ballot by October 27 to help ensure it arrives in time.

How To Register To Vote

There are several options for registering to vote.

1 – Register in person to vote at the Hoke County Board of Elections Office, located in the Pratt Building at 227 North Main Street, Raeford, N.C., 28376 (Deadline Oct. 9)

2 – Register in person to vote using same-day registration, during the one-stop early voting period only at either the Hoke County Board of Elections Office, located in the Pratt Building at 227 North Main Street, Raeford, N.C., 28376; or at the Rockfish Community Building, 27479 Lindsay Road in Rockfish. To use same-day registration, you must attest to your eligibility and provide proof of residence. (Deadline Oct. 31)

3 – Register to vote through the DMV’s website, available here (Deadline Oct. 9)

4 – Register to vote by mailing in your form, available here (Deadline Oct. 9)

Voters can choose from one of several options.

  • Vote in person on Election Day
  • Vote in person during the one-stop early voting period
  • Vote by mail

Vote In Person On Election Day: To find your poll site location for Election Day, use the North Carolina State Board of Elections voter tool here, or call the Hoke County Board of Elections at (910) 875-9062.

Vote In Person During One-Stop Early Voting: Voters can vote during the one-stop early voting period October 15-31 at one of two locations in Hoke County.

Absentee Vote By Mail: Voters can request an absentee ballot online here at the N.C. State Board of Elections website. The deadline to submit a request for an absentee ballot is Tuesday, October 27 by 5 p.m. See the N.C. State Board of Elections website here for detailed information on voting by mail, or here for a list of Frequently Asked Questions about voting by mail.

If voting an absentee ballot, there are several ways voters can return their ballot to the Board of Elections.

  • Mail it by USPS to your county board of elections, postmarked on or before Tuesday, November 3, and received by 5 p.m. November 6 (the N.C. State Board of Elections strongly recommends that you mail it by October 27)
  • Send it by commercial courier service (DHL, FedEx or UPS)
  • Drop it off in person at the Hoke County Board of Elections Office by 5 p.m. Tuesday, November 3
  • Drop it off in person at a one-stop early voting site in Hoke County during early voting hours
