Traffic stop nets drug bust

Deputies with the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office traffic unit arrested a man last week on multiple drug charges after he reportedly fled on foot during a traffic stop.

Investigators arrested Ryan Omar Simmons, 32, of the 600 block of Avant Street in Charlotte on felony charges of possession of a firearm by a felon and possession with intent to sell or deliver cocaine; misdemeanor charges of carrying a concealed gun, simple possession of a schedule II controlled substance, possession of marijuana up to one-half ounce, resisting a public officer and possession of drug paraphernalia; and a traffic violation of failure to display registration plate assigned by the DMV.

Officers conducted a traffic stop on Simmons’ vehicle in the area of Fayetteville Road and Bedford Drive around 11:20 p.m. April 6. The suspect reportedly attempted to flee on foot, according to a report from the sheriff’s office.

After a brief foot chase, deputies took Simmons into custody and searched his vehicle on probable cause. Deputies located a loaded handgun, marijuana, cocaine, codeine and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.

Officers took Simmons before a magistrate who issued him a $20,000 secured bond.
