A police chase that started in Lumberton Sunday when a man allegedly fired gunshots at officers, ended in Hoke County with his arrest.
Authorities arrested Emanuel Lee McPherson, 31, of Lumberton on charges of felony assault on law enforcement officers, first-degree kidnapping, drug charges for marijuana possession and a citation for failure to wear a seatbelt. McPherson was also wanted on multiple outstanding warrants for felony probation violations, among other charges.
The chase began in Lumberton around 12:30 Sunday afternoon when an officer attempted to stop a car after observing that McPherson, a passenger in the front seat, was not wearing a seatbelt, according to authorities. The driver reportedly fled from the traffic stop and McPherson allegedly fired shots at pursuing officers. Police recovered a handgun that was thrown from the vehicle in St. Pauls, reports said.
