Bicyclist flown to hospital after being struck by car

A 20-year-old man from Raeford was flown by helicopter Thursday afternoon to UNC Chapel Hill Medical Center after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle.

John Claude Rose Jr., 20, of the 100 block of RL Smith Lane was in serious to critical condition following the accident, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Locklear.

Rose left the Raeford Fields neighborhood on Bellflower Circle and was turning onto Rockfish Road. He apparently failed to yield for an oncoming white pickup truck, the Trooper said. The vehicle collided with Rose. The driver, Joseph William Johnson of Raeford, was not injured.

The accident happened around 11:45 a.m. Thursday. First responders at the scene called for air transport to take Rose to Chapel Hill.

The Highway Patrol notified Rose’s family of the accident.
