Two people were killed and a third person was sent to the hospital after a shooting Monday night in Hoke County, Sheriff Dr. Hubert Peterkin said.
Peterkin confirmed that two people were dead and at least one other person was shot and taken to a hospital. The third person’s condition was not known.
Based on preliminary reports, the shooting apparently started near the splash pad – a water feature playground for children – at the Hoke County 211 sports complex, located at 3195 Red Springs Road. Peterkin later posted in an update to the sheriff’s office Facebook page that officers were at another location, Piney Bay Mobile Home Park off of Shannon Road, continuing the investigation.
The shooting took place in the early evening hours. Deputies were still on the scene around 9 p.m.
Details such as the victims’ names and ages, and a motive for the shooting were not immediately available. Investigators are working the case. Officers don’t have any suspects in custody at this time.
Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (910) 875-5111.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
